TESDA selects nat’l restaurant services and cooking trade skills champs

BAGUIO CITY, May 9 (PIA) -- The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) gears up for the ASEAN Worldskills Competition through the conduct of pre–qualification selection process that will determine the country’s competitors and experts who will join the Worldskills Philippines Training Camp 2018.

TESDA – Cordillera Regional Director Efren Piñol on Monday officially opened the hosting of the mock competition for restaurant services and cooking trades at the Baguio City School of Arts and Trades (BCSAT), a TESDA institution awarded as a Center of Excellence in Restaurant and Tourism services.


Piñol formally welcomed the competitors and experts from Regions III, IV – A, IX , XI and the Cordillera Administrative Region who will be competing in the two skills.

The Cordillera is represented by Jevo Gygni Calaustro with Expert Mary Kristine Iris Pasion for Cooking and Julie Anne Buaken with expert Joseph Sab – it for Restaurant Services. The four are from BCSAT.

TESDA National Technical Committee member for Mindanao Adrian Ampong outlined that bringing in competitors to international competitions aims to build – up the capabilities of Filipino tech – voc students and TESDA experts.


He said the regional representatives at the national selection are already winners and the best in their respective regions, but TESDA will be selecting who will represent the country for the ASEAN skills competition set in Thailand this September.


The week-long selection process at BCSAT is the third of six scheduled competition since April 23, after the TESDA Regional Training Center in Tacloban hosted the Automobile Technology Area and Korphi – Davao hosted the mechatronics, Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy skills area.


After the pre-qualification selection process, all those who will be selected will undergo Gold Camp 1.0 and 2.0 which shall evaluate the psychological, emotional and physical component of the technical experts and competitors. Those who will demonstrate the highest level of technical and behavioural competence will represent the country in the ASEAN tilt and the Worldskills competition. (ALT/CCD with R.
