BAGUIO CITY – Teamwork and striving for excellence to compete against the best in the world highlighted the Worldskills ASEAN Pre-Qualification Selection Process for Cooking and Restaurant Services held on May 7-11, 2018 at the Baguio City School of Arts and Trades (BCSAT).

Domogan (standing) encouraged the competitors and experts to further their skills as they compete in the global village during the Closing Program of the Worldskills ASEAN Pre-Qualification Selection Process. “There is no question about talents, but in possessing the values and elements that will help in climbing the success ladder and developing skills that will touch other people’s lives,” said Baguio City Mayor Mauricio G. Domogan, who graced the Closing Program on May 11, 2018.

According to Regional Director Francisco B. Jucar, Jr. of TESDA-Region II, and Vice-Chair of the National Technical Committee (NTC), technical skills are critical in national development and the competition was a training ground for the upcoming ASEAN Skills Competition and Worldskills Competition.

“We are happy to have observed that teamwork was developed among the competitors and experts, as this is essential as we aim to surpass at least one of the three countries outranking us in the ASEAN,” said RD Jucar, adding that TESDA is gearing to host the ASEAN Skills Competition in 2022.

Jevo Gygni Calaustro, 21, BCSAT trainee and Region CAR competitor in Cooking, said that the competition was more of a challenge against himself rather than the other competitors as he strives to give his best shot.

“I was not trying to compete against the other competitors, but against the Worldskills standards embedded in the contest package,” said Calaustro, who hopes to be one of those selected for the Goldcamp 1.0 and 2.0, the next step towards qualifying for the ASEAN Skills Competition.

Meanwhile, Atty. Betty Lourdes Tabanda, Chairperson of the Regional Technical Education and Skills Development Committee, encouraged the competitors and experts to continue training and working hard to hone their skills in order to realize their dreams.

“As host region for the competition, we cannot thank everyone enough for making this activity a success, a demonstration of working together to bring out the best in every aspect of this very important event,” said Regional Director Efren F. Piñol of TESDA-CAR.

Accordingly, the NTC will discuss and decide the competitors and experts who will participate in the Goldcamp 1.0, which will evaluate behavioral and psychological performance. Qualifiers to the Goldcamp 2.0 will be the final delegates to represent the country in the ASEAN Skills Competition later this year in Thailand. #
