Regional skills competition concludes Friday, boosts competitors' confidence

The 2019 Regional Skills Competition (RSC) has concluded on April 12, 2019 which inspired a total of 28 competitors in 11 trade areas to do their best and prove that they are masters of their craft.

The regional skills competition adopted the standard scoring system of the World Skills Competition.

Of the 28 competitors, 10 received 10 gold medals, three (3) bagged silver medals, and six (6) received bronze medals.

The remaining participants received certificate of appreciation and a consolation prize.

During the closing ceremony, Dan Erick Mapa of Apayao, a competitor in Graphic Design Technology, said that the unwavering support of the TESDA-CAR and the guidance of their experts made him realize that confidence is a big factor in excelling during the competition.

He declared, “Regardless if it is a new avenue for us, or if we are considered to be amateurs. What really matters is that we believe in ourselves and we can be better and learn from one another."

TESDA-Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) acting regional director Omarkhayyam Dalagan said that education should not be confined within diploma courses but should also put emphasis on the emerging courses that TESDA has to offer.

He ended by quoting Jack Ma, “It is not your fault if you are born poor. But it is your fault if you die poor.”

Department of Education (DepEd) Assistant regional director Bettina Aquino said that gaining experiences from competitions such as the RSC will lead to the competitors’ success.

“This kind of competition I believe is an opportunity for everyone to learn from one another and enhance their skills that are very useful in the future,” she said.

ARD Aquino added that the competitors have proven wrong the people who say that TVET is for the mentally challenged and underachievers wrong.

Meanwhile, TESDA-CAR’s Acting Regional Director Manuel Wong lauded the competitors' invaluable efforts in showcasing their skills in the different trade area.

"It is not about winning the medals during the competition but it is about learning and gaining more skills and competencies in your respective trade areas," he said.

Wong said that RSC provided an avenue to recognize work excellence and develop a new generation of highly skilled Filipino workers from the Cordilleras.

The trade areas in the 2019 RSC were as follows: Cooking, Restaurant Services, Hair Dressing, Beauty Therapy, IT Software Solution for Business, Web Design and Development, Graphic Design Technology, Cabinet Making, Wall and Floor Tiling, Joinery, and Welding Technology.

The winners will compete in the zonal (Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao) and national competitions.

The winners in the national category will then participate in the (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) ASEAN Skills Competition in Singapore in 2020 where they can get a chance to participate in the World Skills Competition in Russia in 2021. (Pamela Mariz Geminiano)
