TESDA supports weaving tradition, provides training on reed craft making

LA PAZ, Abra—As an articulation of the support of Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) on weaving tradition, an eight-day training was given to Liguis Runo Weavers Sustainable Livelihood Program Association to help them produce quality products from runo.

"This training will be used to enhance and upgrade the skills of the weavers,” said Julie Anne Banganan, TESDA provincial director.

She said the 30 beneficiaries of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) availed of the skills training to improve the quality of their products and generate additional income.

"Using reed, they were able to produce wine carriers, placemats, trays, and star vases that they can sell at PHP 150 per piece," she said.

She noted that prior to the training provided, the weavers were just able to sell their products at PHP75.

"We will provide trainings necessary, especially to the weavers to help them continue the local tradition," she said.

Adding, "This is one way of empowering the Indigenous Peoples (IPs) community," he said.
