17 dependents of Ompong victims get free skills training from TESDA

LOAKAN--A total of 17 individuals who are dependents of small scale miners forced to stop their mining activities following a massive landslide in Itogon, Benguet’s mining area have completed their training on Shield Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) National Certificate (NC) l.

"We in TESDA are happy to bring trainings in the barangay level because we understand your need. This is to reiterate that government does everything to help improve lives," said Belmar Angoling, supervising TESD Specialist of Regional Training Center (RTC).

He noted that the scholarship provided to the 17 beneficiaries was a partnership between the Philex Mining Corporation and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority- Regional Training Center (TESDA-RTC).

Of the 17 beneficiaries, 12 are men while 5 were women.

He said that the training started last May 6 and was completed on June 19.

"This is just the start of our commitment in TESDA in molding you to be better individuals. We are here to help build your future," he said.

Adding, "Upgrading your skills in the different qualifications is very important increase your ability to articulate to employers how you can make a difference in the workforce.," he said.

The beneficiaries will also be provided slots for SMAW NC II under the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act that will start on August.

SMAW NC II builds on the skills acquired in SMAW NC I, such as competency in Weld Carbon Steel Plates.

"Once you have finished your SMAW NC II and you were not still able to find a suitable employment, we can also give you slots to avail of other qualifications," he said.

Reiterating that government is exerting effort to streamline the programs and services in line with President Rodrigo Duterte’s directive to come up with a short term plan leading to long and sustainable livelihood program for the victims and their dependents.

Angoling said that the beneficiaries can be referred to both public and private partners of TESDA for employment.

"We can include your names to get endorsed to be employed after completing your national certifications with TESDA. Don’t be afraid to explore the world around you. The need of the labor world has evolved, so continue upgrading your skills training qualifications," he said.

Meanwhile, Philex Mining Corporation communications manager Engr. Marie Aurora Dolipas said that opportunities are made easier and reachable for them through government interventions.

"There will always be this kind of partnership between the government and private sector to help you improve your lives and bring back to the community what they deserve in terms of skills development," she said.

She also urged the beneficiaries to inspire others to consider technical and vocational Education and training (TVET) as a career choice.

"There is nothing to lose if you consider TVET as a career choice but instead there are a lot of things to gain from it. I hope everyone will continue to avail of TESDA services," Dolipas said. (PMTG)
