1.9k IPs in Kalinga received community based training from TESDA

LOAKAN, Baguio City— A total of 1,987 members of the Indigenous People’s community in Kalinga have received community based training under the scholarship program of Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) in-line to the directive of President Rodrigo Duterte to improve the lives of the marginalized sector especially the IP community.

The trainings provided in the whole province of Kalinga were: Basic Training on Manicure and Pedicure, Basic Haircutting, Install Electrical Wiring, Lights and Outlets, Furniture Finishing, Basic Tile Setting, Bread and Pastry Production II, Bread Making, Concrete Hollow blocks Making, Sustainable Agriculture Organic Farming.

Electrical Installation and Maintenance NC II, Basic Body Massage, Draft and cut pattern of casual apparel, Fabricate, install and remove wooden formworks and Basketry and Bag Making.

“We are targeting 4,324 beneficiaries for community based training the whole year, and currently 1,987 graduated already as of May 2019,” said Gabriel Gayacay, provincial director of TESD Kalinga provincial office.

Of the 1,987 beneficiaries, 241 received CBT in January, 247 in February, 434 in March, 645 in April and 420 in May.

He reiterated that TESDA extends its scholarship programs and services to provide more livelihood opportunities for IPs.

"This is our way to help empower and uplift the lives of those in the marginalized sector, especially the IP community," he said.

It can be recalled that TESDA and the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) have forged a partnership to empower the IPs through skills training, among others.
